Morris was born into a privileged family in New York City in 1905. He was a direct descendant of Lewis Morris, a signer of the United States Declaration of Independence. Morris attended Groton School, and graduated from Yale University in 1928. From 1928 to 1929, he studied with realist painters John French Sloan and Kenneth Hayes Miller at the Art Students League of New York. In 1929, he traveled to Paris with Albert Eugene Gallatin. In Paris, he continued his studies with Fernand Léger and Amédée Ozenfant. While in Paris, he became a confirmed abstractionist, and continued writing and publishing on modern movements upon his return to New York. During World War II, Morris worked for a naval architect’s firm as a draftsman. After 1947, he began writing less and focused primarily on painting and sculpture. He was also a founding member of the American Abstract Artists, serving as president of the group in the 1940s. Although Morris exhibited frequently during the 1930s and 1940s, his paintings and sculpture received greatest recognition after the war. He remaining a dedicated practitioner of his own form of Cubism, even as colleagues and friends turned to expressionism in the postwar era. In 1935, Morris married fellow artist Suzy Frelinghuysen. [4] Morris died in an automobile accident, in Stockbridge, Massachusetts in 1975. In 2014, Harry Holtzman and L. Morris, two founding members of American Abstract Artists were paired in an intimate 2-man exhibit, curated by Kinney Frelinghuysen and Madalena Holtzman, and designed to evoke an informal conversation between the two artists. Morris Harry Holtzman Pioneers of American Modernism: Points of Contact. Kinney Frelinghuysen, Madalena Holtzman, Wietse Coppes. Catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition from June 26 to October 12, 2014 at the Frelinghuysen Morris House and Studio Lenox MA. This exhibition marked also the beginning of a collaboration between the Estates of George L. Morris and Harry Holtzman, with support of the Netherlands Institute for Art History. The collaboration aimed at sharing, editing and exhibiting new historical materials related and connected to the world of abstract art of the seminal period of the 30’s and 40’s in Europe and in the USA. For this reason in this first show were present also the works of other European protagonists of the time like Jean Hélion, Cesar Domela, and Ben Nicholson. A project, that duly enlarged and in the details curated will be evolving into a wider exhibition initiative. Morris’a artworks appear in numerous museum collections, including The Phillips Collection and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He is best known for his brightly colored, geometric hard-edge paintings, such as Recessional, from 1950, in the collection of the Honolulu Museum of Art. [8] My name is Tom Grippi and i worked since the age of 9 alongside my father Joseph assisting him in making frames and pulling print editions. My father was passionate about printing my childhood was a fascinating experience and i learned first hand the intricacies of Fine Art world as i grew older through the 1960’s and 70’s my father’s relationships with artists were redefined. Imagination and cooperation are essential parts of a frame dealer’s stock in trade. This was Joseph Grippi’s ethos for nearly 8 yrs at 200 East 59th st NYC where he constructed unique frames during this time he built up an impressive clientele including distinguished collectors and the country’s foremost galleries and museums. He freely worked with competitors sharing his ingenuity and details. More is gained by the individual framer in sharing customers and ideas with his competitors than by regarding other dealers as a threatening menace. Joseph Grippi’s ingenuity in creating frames not found on the market has the added stimulus of his background as an artist and sculptor. He was visiting a gallery where a group of his paintings were hung, when a man nearby remarked about the frames. He told him he made them. The man was Dr. Karl Lilienfeld of the Lilienfeld Galleries. The demand for his work grew. He felt strongly that framed reproductions framed like originals will look like originals, emphasizing the value of the work and giving it dignity. At the time there was a new trend toward driftwood and Mr Grippi was one of the first framers to apply driftwood tones to picture frames. His Gallery G represented artists that include James Kearns, Aubrey Schwartz, Lee Bontecou, Sidney Simon, Peter Paone, Daniel Newman, Henry Niese, George Mueller, Will Barnett and others. He was a master printer of creative and experimental serigraphs commissioned editions include; Paul Burlin, GLK Morris, Paul Jenkins, Al Loving, George Mueller, John Urbain, Ray Parker, Frank Roth, Sven Lukin, Adolph Gottlieb, Henry Koehler, Angelo Savelli, Anni Albers, Andy Warhol and others. Institutional Collections include; Penn State University, Philip Morris Collection, Atlantic Richfield, Mobil Oil, Corporation, Manufacturers Hanover Trust. After my fathers passing in 2001 i began to organize his vast collection of fine prints and other antiques from his World. This item is in the category “Art\Art Prints”.
